TMJ Therapy
Do you suffer from chronic headaches, migraines or facial pain? You may be experiencing symptoms of TMJ disorder– a neuromuscular condition that Dr. Dotson and Dr. DeMars can treat at our Chicago dental spa.
What is TMJ disorder?
TMJ disorder is a condition in which the jaw joints become misaligned. The exact cause of TMJ disorder is unknown, but physical, psychological and emotional stress are considered contributing factors. TMJ disorder is common in our society and it is estimated that as many as 10 million Americans suffer from TMJ-related symptoms.
Common symptoms of TMJ disorder include:
- Jaw pain, clicking or popping
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Clenching and teeth grinding
- Dizziness or ringing in the ears
- Facial, neck, back and shoulder pain
How does TMJ therapy work?
TMJ therapy works by restoring your jaw to its natural, comfortable resting position. Dr. Dotson or Dr. DeMars will evaluate your specific case, using our TekScan computerized bite analysis technology, to determine which therapy will benefit you most. We offer the following therapies to alleviate TMJ-related stress:
- TekScan - Computerized Bite Analysis for determining uneven bite forces. Uneven bite forces can cause tooth pain, jaw pain, headaches, tooth fracture, loose teeth and TMJ.
- Custom Mouthguard - Typically, patients wear a custom mouthguard at night to hold the jaw in its optimal position and prevent teeth grinding.
- Equilibration - Over time, worn teeth, bridges or fillings can create an intolerable bite. Equilibration involves reshaping teeth so they fit together comfortably.
- TENS - A TENS unit sends low-frequency electrical impulses to the jaw, overriding unhealthy neuromuscular impulses and allowing for stress-free positioning.
- Focused Facial Massage - Our TMJ massage focuses on the muscles of the head, face and neck, providing much-needed relief for jaw and facial tension.
